Understanding Athletic Testing

The 40-yard dash measures straight-line acceleration — the most valued athletic trait in football. A 4.4-second 40 translates to roughly 18.6 MPH top speed. A 4.3 is 19.0 MPH. The difference between a 4.4 and a 4.6 is about 1 yard over 40 yards — small on a stopwatch, significant on the field.

Vertical jump measures explosive lower-body power — the ability to generate force rapidly. It correlates strongly with sprint speed, change of direction, and tackling power. A 36"+ vertical is elite for most positions. Broad jump tests similar qualities in a horizontal plane and is considered by many scouts to be a better predictor of on-field explosiveness than the vertical jump.
