Key Baseball Statistics
Batting average (AVG = Hits ÷ At Bats) was the gold standard for decades but has been supplemented by OBP (On-Base Percentage, which includes walks) and SLG (Slugging, which weights extra-base hits). OPS combines both: OBP + SLG. An OPS above .800 is good, above .900 is excellent, and above 1.000 is elite.
ERA (Earned Run Average = Earned Runs × 9 ÷ Innings Pitched) measures how many earned runs a pitcher allows per 9 innings. An ERA under 3.00 is excellent, under 4.00 is good, and above 5.00 is below average. WHIP (Walks + Hits per Inning Pitched) measures baserunners allowed — under 1.10 is elite.
