How to Choose the Right Gi Size
A properly fitting BJJ gi should have sleeves that end 1-2 inches above the wrist bone and pants that end 1-2 inches above the ankle bone (IBJJF rules require this for competition). The jacket should overlap at the chest with enough room to grip but not so loose that it creates excessive material for your opponent to grab. After the first wash in warm water, most gis shrink 1-2 inches in length and 0.5-1 inch in width.
If you are between sizes, the general recommendation is to size up and shrink the gi by washing in warm/hot water and drying on medium heat. A gi that is too small cannot be fixed — the sleeves and pants will ride up during rolling, making it competition-illegal and uncomfortable. A gi that is slightly too large can be shrunk to fit.
Brand-Specific Notes
Sizing varies between brands. Shoyoroll and Origin tend to run smaller and slimmer. Tatami and Fuji are true to the standard chart. Hayabusa runs slightly large. Kingz fits average but has generous sleeve length. If you are buying a brand for the first time, check their specific size chart and compare to this standard — but this calculator gives you the right starting point 90% of the time.
What about women's gi sizes?
Women's gis (F1-F5 or W1-W5) have narrower shoulders, shorter torsos, wider hips, and tapered sleeves compared to men's A-sizes. An A1 is not the same as an F3, even if the height/weight range overlaps. If you are a woman, buy a women's cut — the fit difference is significant for comfort and competition legality.
Pearl weave vs gold weave vs single weave?
Pearl weave is the most common competition gi — lightweight (3-4 lbs), durable, and fast-drying. Gold weave is heavier (4-5 lbs) and nearly indestructible but hotter. Single weave is the lightest (2.5-3 lbs) but less durable. For most people, pearl weave is the right choice. If you compete near the top of your weight class, single weave saves 0.5-1 lb at weigh-in.
