How IBJJF Scoring Works
Points are awarded for achieving and maintaining dominant positions for 3 seconds of stabilization. The hierarchy reflects positional dominance: back control and mount (4 points) are the most dominant positions, guard passing (3 points) demonstrates superior pressure, and takedowns, sweeps, and knee-on-belly (2 points) establish initial control. Points are not awarded for reaching a position briefly — you must hold it with control.
Advantages break ties when points are equal. An advantage is awarded for a near-scoring position (almost passing guard, briefly achieving mount) or a near-submission (opponent defends but was in danger). If points and advantages are tied, the referee decides the winner based on who was more aggressive and closer to finishing the match.
Submissions override all points — a submission win at any time ends the match regardless of the score. This is why BJJ emphasizes finishing ability alongside positional control.
