Credit Card vs Debit Card: Which Should You Use?
Credit cards are better in almost every way — IF you pay the balance in full every month.
Credit cards offer fraud protection, purchase protection, cash back or travel rewards, and build credit history. Debit cards offer none of these benefits. The ONLY scenario where debit cards win: you cannot trust yourself to pay the balance in full, in which case the 20-25% interest makes credit cards a wealth-destroying trap.
The Rewards Math
A 2% cash back credit card on $2,000/month spending = $480/year in free money. Over 10 years: $4,800. Travel cards can provide even more value — a good travel card turns $2,000/month spending into $600-1,000/year in travel value. This is money you leave on the table by using debit.
Fraud Protection Difference
Credit card fraud: the bank money is at risk, not yours. You dispute the charge and the bank investigates while you keep your money. Debit card fraud: YOUR money is gone from your account immediately. The bank investigates and may return it in 10-45 days. During that time, your rent check might bounce.
