First Apartment Checklist: Everything You Need and What It Costs

Moving into your first apartment costs $3,000-6,000 upfront before you even pay rent. Here is the complete list.

The upfront costs most first-time renters forget: security deposit (1-2 months rent: $1,000-3,000), first month rent ($1,000-1,500), last month rent (sometimes required: $1,000-1,500), application fees ($25-75 per application), renter insurance ($15-30/month), utility deposits ($100-300), and moving costs ($200-500 DIY).

The Essentials Checklist (with costs)

Bed and mattress: $300-800 (queen mattress-in-a-box is the best value). Sheets and pillows: $50-100. Towels: $30-60. Shower curtain and bath mat: $15-30. Basic cookware (pot, pan, spatula, knife): $50-100. Plates, bowls, cups, utensils (4 each): $30-60. Cleaning supplies: $30-50. Trash cans: $15-30. Toilet paper, paper towels, soap: $20. Basic toolkit: $20-40. Total essentials: $560-1,290.

What You Do NOT Need Right Away

A couch (use folding chairs for a month — you will survive). A dining table (counter or desk works). Decorations. A full set of matching dishware. Specialty kitchen gadgets. A TV stand (put it on a box). Live with the bare minimum for 1-2 months, then buy things as you realize you actually need them. Most first-apartment purchases end up donated within 2 years.
