How to Calculate Percentages: 5 Methods for Every Situation

Percentages confuse millions of adults. These five methods cover every real-world situation you will encounter.

Method 1: What is X% of Y? Move the decimal left twice and multiply. 15% of $80: 0.15 × 80 = $12. Method 2: What percentage is X of Y? Divide and multiply by 100. 25 out of 80: 25/80 × 100 = 31.25%. Method 3: Percentage increase/decrease: (New - Old) / Old × 100. Price went from $50 to $65: (65-50)/50 × 100 = 30% increase.

The Mental Math Shortcuts

10% of anything: move the decimal left once. 10% of $67 = $6.70. Build from there: 5% = half of 10%. 20% = double 10%. 15% = 10% + 5%. For tips: 20% of $67 = $6.70 × 2 = $13.40. The flip trick: 8% of 50 = 50% of 8 = 4. Pick whichever direction is easier to calculate.

Common Percentage Mistakes

Percentage points vs percentages: a rate going from 5% to 7% is a 2 percentage point increase but a 40% increase. Stacking discounts: 30% off plus 20% off is NOT 50% off. It is 30% off the original, then 20% off the discounted price = 44% total discount. These distinctions matter in finance, statistics, and any negotiation.
