How to Build Your Wedding Day Timeline: Hour by Hour

Everything takes longer than you think. Here is how to build a realistic schedule that keeps the day stress-free.

The number one complaint from couples after their wedding: everything felt rushed. The fix is building buffer time into every transition. Hair and makeup always runs long. Family photos take twice as long as expected. Cocktail hour feels too short. Build your timeline with 15-30 minute buffers between events.

The Standard Timeline

For a 4:00 PM ceremony: hair and makeup starts at 10:30 AM (yes, really — 90-120 minutes for the bride, 45-60 minutes per bridesmaid). Getting dressed and detail photos at 1:00 PM. First look at 1:30 PM (optional but saves 60-90 minutes of post-ceremony photos). Wedding party photos at 2:00 PM. Guests arrive at 3:30 PM. Ceremony at 4:00 PM. Family formals at 4:30 PM. Cocktail hour at 5:00 PM. Grand entrance at 6:00 PM. Dinner, toasts, dances, cake, and dancing until 10:30-11:00 PM.

The Golden Hour Trick

Schedule 30 minutes of couple photos during golden hour (the hour before sunset) for the best lighting. Step away from the reception for sunset photos — your DJ keeps the party going and guests barely notice you are gone for 20 minutes. These photos will be your favorites from the entire day.
