How Cars Depreciate

The average new car loses 20-25% of its value in year one, then 15% per year for years 2-3, 10% per year for years 4-5, and 5-8% per year after that. A $35,000 car is worth approximately $26,000 after year one, $19,000 after three years, and $14,000 after five years. Trucks and SUVs hold value best (slowest depreciation). Luxury and electric vehicles depreciate fastest.

The sweet spot for value: buy a 2-3 year old certified pre-owned vehicle. Someone else absorbs the steepest depreciation while you get a nearly-new car with remaining warranty at 30-40% off the original MSRP.
