Litter Usage by Type

Clumping clay: 28 lbs per cat per month. Most popular — forms scoopable clumps. Crystal/silica: 15 lbs per cat. More absorbent, less tracking, but some cats dislike the texture. Pine/natural: 25 lbs per cat. Eco-friendly, good odor control. Lightweight: 20 lbs per cat. Easier to carry but costs more per pound. Scoop daily and do a full change every 2-4 weeks.

The Litter Box Rule

The golden rule: one litter box per cat, plus one extra. Two cats need 3 boxes. Place boxes in different locations — cats prefer options and may avoid a box that smells like another cat. A covered box gives privacy but traps odors (clean more frequently). Uncovered boxes are easier to maintain and most cats prefer them.

⚡ CalcWolf Insight

Over a 15-year lifespan, one cat generates about 5,040 lbs of litter waste. Switching from clay to pine or recycled paper reduces environmental impact by 80% while performing comparably.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I change cat litter completely?
Scoop clumps daily. Full litter change: every 2-4 weeks for clumping clay, every 2-3 weeks for crystals, every 1-2 weeks for pine. Wash the box with mild soap during each full change. Never use bleach or strong chemicals — cats are sensitive to residual odors.
How many litter boxes do I need?
Number of cats plus one. One cat: 2 boxes. Two cats: 3 boxes. Three cats: 4 boxes. Place in separate, quiet locations. If cats share a single box despite having multiple, that is fine — but always provide the option.
