What Size Compost Bin?
Calculate compost bin size by household and yard waste volume.
Compost Bin Sizing
A compost pile needs at least 3x3x3 feet (27 cubic feet) to generate the internal heat needed for efficient decomposition. Below this size, the pile cannot sustain temperatures of 130-160F that kill weed seeds and pathogens. For a family of four with a medium yard: a 4x4x3 foot bin handles weekly input nicely. Two bins are the ideal setup — fill one while the other cures into finished compost. A tumbler composter works for small households but cannot handle large volumes of yard waste.
The Green-Brown Ratio
The magic ratio is 3:1 browns to greens by volume. Browns (carbon): dry leaves, shredded cardboard, straw, newspaper, sawdust. Greens (nitrogen): fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, fresh grass clippings, plant trimmings. Too many greens creates a slimy, stinky anaerobic mess. Too many browns means decomposition stalls for months. The most common beginner mistake: adding kitchen scraps without enough browns. Keep a bag of dry leaves next to your compost bin and add a handful every time you dump food scraps.
Composting diverts 30% of household waste from landfills while producing free soil amendment worth $100-200/year.
