The Leap Year Rule

A year is a leap year if: divisible by 4, EXCEPT years divisible by 100, UNLESS also divisible by 400. So 2024 = leap (÷4). 1900 = NOT leap (÷100). 2000 = leap (÷400). This correction exists because Earth orbits the Sun in 365.2422 days — without leap years, the calendar would drift by 1 day every 4 years.

Leap Year Fun Facts

People born on Feb 29 (leaplings) only celebrate their actual birthday every 4 years. There are approximately 5 million leaplings worldwide. The odds of being born on Feb 29: 1 in 1,461. In the Gregorian calendar, leap years repeat on a 400-year cycle containing exactly 97 leap years.

Frequently asked questions

No. 2026 is not divisible by 4. The next leap year is 2028. The previous was 2024.
Why do we have leap years?
Earth takes 365.2422 days to orbit the Sun. Without adding a day every 4 years, the calendar would drift by ~24 days per century. By 2026, summer would start in what we call August. Leap years keep the calendar aligned with the seasons.
