Sizing a Dog Bed

Measure your dog from nose to base of tail while lying in their natural sleeping position. Add 4 inches for curlers, 8 inches for side sleepers, and 12 inches for sprawlers. The bed should be large enough that no part of the dog hangs off the edge in their preferred sleeping position.

Bed Types by Need

Bolster/donut beds: Best for curlers who like to nest against raised edges. Flat/pillow beds: Best for side sleepers who stretch out. Orthopedic beds: Essential for senior dogs, large breeds, and dogs with joint issues. Look for 4+ inches of memory foam — thin "orthopedic" beds are marketing fluff. Elevated/cot beds: Best for hot climates — air circulates underneath for cooling.

⚡ CalcWolf Insight

The most common dog bed mistake: buying too small. Dogs grow into beds, and a slightly oversized bed is always better than one they outgrow. For puppies, buy the adult size now — they will grow into it within months and you avoid buying multiple beds.

Frequently asked questions
Do dogs really need a bed?
Yes. Sleeping on hard floors stresses joints, especially in large breeds and seniors. Orthopedic beds reduce joint pain, improve sleep quality, and can extend mobility in aging dogs. Even young dogs benefit from a dedicated sleeping spot — it supports crate training and provides a sense of security.
How often should I replace a dog bed?
Every 1-3 years. Replace when filling is flat, odor persists after washing, or your dog avoids it. Senior dogs benefit from more frequent replacement.
