How to Measure Your Dog's Neck

Use a soft tape measure (or a string + ruler) around the base of your dog's neck, where the collar sits. Add 2 inches for comfort. You should be able to fit two fingers between the collar and your dog's neck — snug enough that it cannot slip over the head, loose enough to not restrict breathing or cause chafing.

Collar Width by Dog Size

Wider collars distribute pressure more evenly: Toy/Small dogs: 3/8" to 1/2" width. Medium dogs: 3/4". Large dogs: 1". Giant breeds: 1.5-2". For dogs that pull, a wider collar prevents neck strain. For well-trained leash walkers, narrower collars are comfortable and lightweight.

⚡ CalcWolf Insight

Breakaway collars are essential for dogs left unsupervised in areas where the collar could snag on branches, fences, or crate wires. Standard buckle collars can cause strangulation if caught. Use a breakaway collar for everyday wear and switch to a standard collar for walks.
