How Dog Food Portions Are Calculated

A dog's caloric needs are based on Resting Energy Requirement (RER): 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75. This is multiplied by an activity factor: 1.0 for average adult dogs, 1.4-1.8 for active/working dogs, 0.8 for seniors or less active dogs, and 2.0-3.0 for puppies. A 50-pound average adult dog needs approximately 1,000-1,100 calories per day.

The most common feeding mistake is overfeeding. Over 50% of US dogs are overweight or obese. Bag feeding guidelines are often 20-30% too generous because manufacturers benefit from you buying more food. Use your dog's body condition (visible waist from above, ribs easily felt but not visible) rather than strict cup measurements.
