Fence Material Guide

Wood fences use 4×4 posts every 8 feet (6 feet on center for stronger fence), 2×4 rails (2 for fences under 5 ft, 3 for taller), and pickets at 3.5 inches wide with 0-0.25 inch gaps. A 150-foot privacy fence needs approximately 19-20 posts, 57-60 rails, and 500+ pickets. Add 10% to all quantities for waste and cuts.

Cedar costs more upfront ($15-25/ft installed) but lasts 15-20 years without treatment. Pressure-treated pine costs less ($12-18/ft) but needs staining every 2-3 years. Vinyl costs $20-35/ft but is maintenance-free for 20-30 years. Chain link is cheapest ($8-15/ft) but provides no privacy without slats.
