The FIRE Formula

Financial Independence requires a portfolio of 25× your annual expenses (at a 4% withdrawal rate). If you spend $45,000/year, your FIRE number is $1,125,000. At a 3.5% rate (more conservative): $1,285,714. At 3% (very conservative): $1,500,000. The 4% rule comes from the Trinity Study, which found that a diversified portfolio with 4% annual withdrawals historically lasted 30+ years 96% of the time.

Your savings rate is the single most important variable. Someone saving 50% of income reaches FIRE in approximately 17 years regardless of income level. Someone saving 20% needs approximately 37 years. Saving 70% = ~8.5 years. The math is driven by the ratio of savings to spending, not by absolute income.
