How Much Baseboard Molding Do You Need?
Calculate linear feet of baseboard trim minus doorways. With corner pieces and cost estimate.
Measuring for Baseboard
Measure each wall length individually and add them up for the perimeter. Subtract the width of each doorway (no baseboard behind open doors). Add 5% for waste and cutting errors plus 6 inches per doorway for the return cuts at door casings. For an average bedroom (52 ft perimeter, 2 doors): approximately 46-48 linear feet of baseboard.
Installation Order
Install baseboards after flooring and painting (or at least priming) are complete. Start with the longest wall opposite the door — this is the most visible piece. Cut inside corners with a cope joint (not miter) for a tight fit that stays tight. Use a brad nailer with 2-inch 18-gauge nails. Fill nail holes with wood filler, then touch up paint.
MDF baseboard is 30-50% cheaper than pine and takes paint beautifully. The downside: it swells when exposed to water (bathroom floors, mopping). For bathrooms and kitchens, use PVC or primed pine baseboard that handles moisture without swelling.
