How Old Is My Dog in Human Years?
Convert dog age to human years using the updated scientific formula. More accurate than the old 7x rule.
The Updated Dog Age Formula
The old "multiply by 7" rule is inaccurate. Dogs age rapidly in their first two years — a 1-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human, and a 2-year-old is about 24. After that, each dog year equals approximately 4-6 human years depending on size. Smaller dogs age slower and live longer; giant breeds age faster and have shorter lifespans. A 2019 study using DNA methylation found that dogs age non-linearly, with the fastest aging occurring in the first year.
Size Matters: Life Expectancy by Breed
Small breeds (Chihuahua, Yorkie): 12-16 years, become senior at 10-12. Medium breeds (Beagle, Bulldog): 10-14 years, senior at 8-10. Large breeds (Lab, Golden): 8-12 years, senior at 7-8. Giant breeds (Great Dane, Mastiff): 6-10 years, senior at 5-6. The size-lifespan relationship in dogs is one of the strongest in all of biology — a Chihuahua lives 2-3x longer than a Great Dane.
