Calculate MPG & Fuel Cost Per Mile
Track your gas mileage (MPG), cost per mile, and annual fuel cost. Compare your car to the EPA estimate.
How to Calculate MPG
MPG = Miles Driven ÷ Gallons Used. Fill your tank, reset the trip odometer, drive normally, and fill up again. Divide the miles on the odometer by the gallons needed to fill up. For accuracy, do this over 2-3 fill-ups and average the results. Real-world MPG is typically 10-20% lower than EPA estimates due to driving style, traffic, weather, and terrain.
Improving Your MPG
Driving habits (biggest impact): Avoid aggressive acceleration and hard braking (improves MPG 15-30%). Drive 55-65 mph instead of 75+ (each 5 mph over 50 costs ~$0.20/gallon). Maintenance: Properly inflated tires (improves 3%), clean air filter (up to 10%), regular oil changes. Vehicle: Remove roof racks when not in use (5-10% improvement), minimize idling, use cruise control on highways.
Gas mileage calculator searches spike when gas prices rise — a $0.50/gallon increase can double search volume within a week. Having this page indexed and ranking before the next price spike captures massive reactive traffic.
