Understanding GPA
GPA is calculated by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours, summing those products, then dividing by total credit hours. A student earning an A (4.0) in a 4-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 3-credit course has: (4.0×4 + 3.0×3) / (4+3) = 25/7 = 3.57 GPA. Credit hours matter — a low grade in a 4-credit class hurts more than in a 1-credit class.
Most colleges require a 2.0 GPA minimum to graduate. Graduate school admissions typically expect 3.0+. Competitive programs (medical, law, business) expect 3.5+. Dean's list is usually 3.5+. Summa cum laude typically requires 3.9+, magna cum laude 3.7+, and cum laude 3.5+.
