Hamster Cage Size Requirements
The minimum recommended cage floor space for hamsters (per ASPCA and hamster welfare organizations): Syrian hamster: 620+ sq inches (approximately 40×16"). Dwarf hamsters: 450+ sq inches. Most pet store cages (Crittertrail, Habitrail) are far too small at 150-300 sq inches. Stress behaviors (bar chewing, excessive burrowing, aggression) almost always improve with a larger cage. The single best thing you can do for a hamster is provide adequate space.
Best Cage Options
Bin cages (DIY): A 110-quart clear storage bin ($15-20) provides 600+ sq inches and is the most affordable option. Cut a ventilation panel in the lid and cover with hardware cloth. IKEA Detolf: A glass display case laid on its side (940 sq inches) — the gold standard among hamster enthusiasts. Large commercial cages: Prevue 528 (620 sq in) or Niteangel Vista (650+ sq in). Avoid: any cage with tubes (hard to clean, poor ventilation) or wire floors (cause bumblefoot).
