Calculate Bandwidth & Data Transfer Speed
Convert between bandwidth units. Calculate download time, streaming needs, and household bandwidth requirements.
Mbps vs MB/s — The Crucial Difference
Internet speeds are advertised in Mbps (megabits per second) but downloads show MB/s (megabytes per second). There are 8 bits in a byte, so divide Mbps by 8 to get MB/s. A 100 Mbps connection downloads at approximately 12.5 MB/s. A 5 GB file at 100 Mbps takes about 6.8 minutes — not the "instant" many people expect.
Bandwidth Requirements
Per activity: Email/browsing: 1-5 Mbps. SD video: 3 Mbps. HD video: 5-8 Mbps. 4K video: 25 Mbps. Video calls: 3-5 Mbps. Online gaming: 3-10 Mbps (latency matters more than speed). Per household: 1-2 people: 50-100 Mbps. Family of 4: 100-300 Mbps. Heavy users/streamers: 300-500 Mbps. Home office + streaming: 200+ Mbps. Gigabit (1000 Mbps) is overkill for most households but ensures no bottlenecks.
The "you only need 25 Mbps" claim from the FCC (2015 broadband definition) is woefully outdated. A single 4K Netflix stream uses 25 Mbps. With remote work, video calls, smart home devices, and multiple family members, 100 Mbps should be the minimum standard in 2026. Many ISPs offer 300-500 Mbps for $50-70/month — worth it for the headroom.
