Gutter Sizing and Placement

Standard residential gutters are 5 inches wide (K-style) or 6 inches (for heavy rainfall areas). Gutters should slope 1/4 inch per 10 feet toward the downspout for proper drainage. Downspouts are placed every 30-40 feet of gutter run. Extensions should direct water at least 4-6 feet from the foundation to prevent basement water issues.

Material Comparison

Aluminum (most popular): lightweight, rust-proof, 20-30 year lifespan, available in seamless. Vinyl: cheapest, easy DIY, but brittle in cold climates (10-20 years). Steel: strongest, handles heavy snow/ice, but rusts without coating. Copper: beautiful patina, 50+ year lifespan, 3-5x the cost of aluminum.

⚡ CalcWolf Insight

Clogged gutters cause more foundation damage than any other single factor. Water overflowing near the foundation leads to basement leaks, soil erosion, and eventually foundation cracking. Clean gutters twice a year (spring and fall) or install gutter guards.

Frequently asked questions
How much do gutters cost installed?
Aluminum (most common): $4-9/linear foot installed. A typical home with 120-160 linear feet: $500-1,400 including downspouts. Seamless aluminum adds $1-2/foot. Gutter guards add $3-8/foot.
Are gutter guards worth it?
For homes surrounded by trees: yes. Quality gutter guards ($5-10/ft installed) eliminate annual gutter cleaning ($150-300/year). They pay for themselves in 3-5 years and prevent ice dams and overflow damage. Avoid cheap mesh screens — they clog with fine debris and pine needles.
