Roman Numeral System

Seven symbols: I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100, D=500, M=1000. Numbers are formed by adding symbols left to right. A smaller symbol before a larger one means subtraction: IV=4, IX=9, XL=40, XC=90, CD=400, CM=900. The year 2026 = MMXXVI (1000+1000+10+10+5+1).

Where You See Roman Numerals

Super Bowl numbers (Super Bowl LVIII = 58), clock faces, movie sequels (Rocky IV), building cornerstones, outlines and lists, and copyright years on films. The system works for 1-3,999. Ancient Romans used different notation for larger numbers, but modern usage rarely exceeds 3,999.

⚡ CalcWolf Insight

The most commonly searched Roman numeral query: "What is the Super Bowl number?" Super Bowl numbering uses Roman numerals to add prestige — Super Bowl LVIII (58) sounds more impressive than "Super Bowl 58." The exception: Super Bowl 50 used Arabic numerals because "Super Bowl L" looked like a losing record.

Frequently asked questions
What is 2026 in Roman numerals?
MMXXVI. M=1000, M=1000, X=10, X=10, V=5, I=1. Total: 2026.
How does the subtraction rule work?
When a smaller numeral appears before a larger one, subtract it. IV = 5-1 = 4. IX = 10-1 = 9. XL = 50-10 = 40. Only I, X, and C can be subtracted, and only from the next two larger values.
