Margin vs Markup
Margin is profit as a percentage of selling price. Markup is profit as a percentage of cost. They are different numbers from the same transaction. If you buy for $60 and sell for $100: profit is $40. Margin = $40/$100 = 40%. Markup = $40/$60 = 66.7%. Same $40 profit, very different percentages. Confusing the two is one of the most common pricing mistakes in business.
