What Net Worth Means

Net worth = everything you own minus everything you owe. It is the single best measure of financial health — more meaningful than income, savings rate, or investment returns in isolation. A person earning $200,000 with $300,000 in debt has a lower net worth than someone earning $60,000 with $100,000 saved and no debt.

Median net worth by age in the US: Under 35: $39,000. Ages 35-44: $135,000. Ages 45-54: $247,000. Ages 55-64: $364,000. Ages 65-74: $409,000. If you are above the median for your age group, you are doing better than half of Americans.
