Is a Season Pass Worth It?
The break-even calculation is simple: divide the season pass price by the day ticket price. If a pass costs $899 and day tickets are $189, you break even at 4.8 days — so 5 days of skiing makes the pass worth it. But the true cost of a ski day includes gas, food, and possibly rental equipment. When you factor in $30-50 of gas and $40-60 of lodge food, each ski day costs $250-300 regardless of whether you have a pass or day ticket.
Season passes also change behavior. Pass holders ski more because there is no marginal cost per visit. "I already paid for it" psychology means you will drive up on powder days, weekday afternoons, and spring sessions you would skip if each trip cost $189. Most pass holders ski 2-3 more days per season than they would buying day tickets — and that extra skiing is the real value.
Multi-resort passes: Ikon vs Epic
Ikon Pass ($1,099-1,259 for 2025-26) covers 50+ resorts worldwide with limited days at premium mountains. Epic Pass ($841-979) covers 40+ Vail Resorts properties with unlimited access. Both include destination resorts worth $150-250/day. If you plan any destination ski trips, the pass often pays for itself in 3-4 days even before counting your home mountain.
