Cubic yards of topsoil, garden soil, or compost
Soil Buying Guide
One cubic yard of soil weighs approximately 2,000-2,400 pounds and fills about 13-14 wheelbarrow loads. It covers roughly 54 sq ft at 6 inches deep. Bulk delivery ($25-55 per cubic yard) is dramatically cheaper than bags ($5-8 per cubic foot, which is $135-216 per cubic yard equivalent). For anything over 2 cubic yards, always buy bulk.
For raised beds, use a mix of 60% topsoil, 30% compost, and 10% perlite or vermiculite. Pure topsoil is too dense for containers and raised beds — it compacts and drains poorly. Pure compost is too nutrient-rich and breaks down quickly, causing the bed to sink. The blend provides structure, nutrients, and drainage.
