The Speed-Distance-Time Triangle

Three formulas from one relationship: Speed = Distance / Time. Distance = Speed x Time. Time = Distance / Speed. Know any two, solve for the third. Driving 240 miles at 60 mph takes 4 hours. Running 5 miles in 40 minutes means 7.5 mph average speed. These calculations apply to any moving object — cars, runners, planes, ships.

Real-World Applications

Road trips: How long will 450 miles take at 65 mph? 6.9 hours driving time (add 30-60 minutes for stops). Running: To finish a 10K in 50 minutes, what pace? 10K = 6.21 miles, so 6.21/0.833 hours = 7.45 mph = 8:03/mile pace. Delivery estimates: Package 200 miles away via truck at 55 mph average = 3.6 hours transit time.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to drive 100 miles?
At 60 mph: 1 hour 40 minutes. At 70 mph: 1 hour 26 minutes. At 55 mph: 1 hour 49 minutes. These are pure driving times — add 10-15 minutes per hour for traffic, stops, and speed variations on real roads.
How do I calculate average speed?
Total distance divided by total time. If you drive 180 miles in 3 hours (including a 20-minute stop), your average speed is 180/3 = 60 mph. Note this includes the stop time — your moving speed was faster but your average accounts for all time elapsed.
