📖 Study Hours Calculator
How much should you study per week?
The 2-3 Hours Per Credit Hour Rule
The standard college recommendation: 2-3 hours of study per credit hour per week, outside of class. A 15-credit semester means 30-45 hours of study per week on top of 15 hours in class. That is 45-60 hours total — equivalent to a full-time job plus overtime. Most students do not hit this target, which is why most students do not earn straight As.
STEM courses (math, science, engineering) typically require the higher end (3 hours per credit) due to problem sets, lab reports, and conceptual difficulty. Humanities courses may require less time per week but have heavy reading and writing loads around midterms and finals.
How to study effectively (not just more)
Active recall (testing yourself) is 2-3x more effective than re-reading notes. Spaced repetition (reviewing material at increasing intervals) beats cramming. The Pomodoro technique (25 min focus + 5 min break) prevents burnout. Teaching concepts to someone else reveals gaps in your understanding. One hour of active study replaces 2-3 hours of passive reading.
