Triathlon Distances
Sprint triathlon (750m swim, 20K bike, 5K run) is the entry-level distance, finishable in 1-2 hours. Olympic distance (1.5K swim, 40K bike, 10K run) doubles the sprint and takes 2-4 hours. Half Ironman 70.3 (1.9K swim, 90K bike, 21.1K run) takes 4-7 hours. Full Ironman 140.6 (3.8K swim, 180K bike, 42.2K run) takes 8-17 hours and is one of the most demanding single-day endurance events in sport.
Transition time (T1: swim-to-bike, T2: bike-to-run) adds 2-10 minutes depending on race distance and experience. Beginners lose 3-5 minutes per transition. Experienced triathletes complete each in 1-2 minutes. Practice transitions — they are often called "the fourth discipline" because time saved here is free speed that requires no fitness improvement.
What is a good triathlon time for beginners?
Sprint: under 1:30:00 is solid for a first-timer. Olympic: under 3:00:00. Half Ironman: under 6:30:00. Full Ironman: finishing is the achievement — the cutoff is 17 hours, and any finish under 12 hours is respectable for an age-group athlete. Median Ironman finish time is approximately 12:30:00.
