How Many Rolls of Wallpaper Do You Need?
Calculate wallpaper rolls for any room with pattern repeat matching and waste factor.
Measuring for Wallpaper
Measure the room perimeter (all four walls added together) and the wall height. Subtract doors (21 sq ft each) and windows (15 sq ft each). Then add waste for pattern repeat — the larger the pattern, the more waste per strip because you must align the pattern across strips. A 24" repeat can waste 20-25% of each strip.
Pattern Repeat Explained
The pattern repeat is the distance between identical points in the design. A 0" repeat (random match) wastes almost nothing. A 12" repeat wastes about 10% per strip. A 24"+ repeat can waste 25%. For large patterns, you can sometimes alternate strips from different rolls to reduce waste (ask the manufacturer).
Installation Tips
Start at a focal point and work outward (a wall with no doors/windows is ideal). Use a plumb line or laser level for the first strip — walls are rarely perfectly plumb. Apply paste evenly and let it "book" (fold paste side to paste side) for 5-10 minutes before hanging. Smooth with a wallpaper brush from center to edges. Use a sharp blade for trimming at ceiling and baseboards.
Buy all rolls from the same "dye lot" or "batch number." Different production runs can have subtle color variations that become visible once hung. If you need 10 rolls, make sure all 10 have the same batch number on the label.
