A standard wedding cake slice is 1 inch wide by 2 inches deep by 4 inches tall. Each tier size provides a specific number of servings: 6-inch tier = 12 servings, 8-inch = 24, 10-inch = 38, 12-inch = 56, 14-inch = 78, 16-inch = 100. A 3-tier cake (6-10-14) serves approximately 128 guests. A 2-tier (8-12) serves 80.
The budget-saving trick used by most bakers: display a beautiful 2-3 tier cake for photos and cutting, plus sheet cakes cut in the kitchen for actual serving. Guests get identical cake; you save $200-500 on an extra decorative tier.
