How Weighted Grades Work

Weighted grading assigns different importance to different types of work. A typical college course: Homework 20%, Quizzes 15%, Midterm 25%, Final Exam 30%, Participation 10%. If you have 95% on homework but 70% on the midterm, your grade is not a simple average of 82.5% — it is (95×0.20 + 70×0.25) = 19 + 17.5 = 36.5% of the total so far.

This calculator handles any number of categories with any weights. The weights should add up to 100%, but it works even if they do not — it will normalize them. Enter your grade in each category and its weight from the syllabus.
