How to Build Credit From Nothing: The Step-by-Step Guide

No credit is different from bad credit — but both make life expensive. Here is how to go from invisible to 750+.

If you have no credit history (common for young adults, immigrants, and anyone who has never borrowed), you cannot get a traditional credit card. But there are four proven pathways to build credit from zero.

The Four Pathways

1. Secured credit card: deposit $200-500 as collateral, get a credit card with that amount as your limit. Use it for one small recurring charge (Netflix), pay the full balance monthly, and your credit score builds within 6-12 months. After 12 months, the card typically converts to an unsecured card and your deposit is returned. Best options: Discover it Secured, Capital One Platinum Secured.

2. Authorized user: ask a parent or family member with good credit to add you as an authorized user on their card. Their positive payment history appears on your credit report immediately. You do not even need to use the card. 3. Credit-builder loan: a small loan ($500-1,000) held in a savings account while you make payments. After 12 months, you receive the money plus a built credit history. Available at credit unions and online (Self, MoneyLion). 4. Student credit card: designed for students with limited credit history. Lower limits ($500-1,000) and easier approval.

The Timeline

Month 1: open a secured card or become an authorized user. Month 3-6: credit score appears (typically starting at 580-650). Month 6-12: score climbs to 670-720 with perfect payment history and low utilization. Month 12-18: qualify for a regular credit card. Month 18-24: score reaches 720-750. The entire process from zero to good credit takes about 2 years of consistent, responsible use.
