Exercise Needs by Breed Energy Level

Low energy (Bulldog, Basset Hound): 20-30 minutes/day. Short walks and gentle play. Medium (Golden Retriever, Beagle): 45-60 minutes/day. Moderate walks plus fetch or play. High (Border Collie, Lab, Husky): 60-90 minutes/day. Running, hiking, swimming, or agility. Very high (Belgian Malinois, Pointer): 90-120+ minutes/day. Intensive exercise plus mental stimulation. Under-exercised dogs develop behavioral problems.

Puppy Exercise Caution

The 5-minute rule: Puppies should exercise no more than 5 minutes per month of age, twice daily. A 4-month puppy: maximum 20 minutes per walk. Excessive exercise in puppies damages developing joints and growth plates, potentially causing lifelong problems (hip dysplasia, osteochondritis). Let puppies play freely but avoid forced long walks, running on hard surfaces, or high-impact jumping until growth plates close (12-18 months for most breeds, 18-24 months for large breeds).

⚡ CalcWolf Insight

A Michigan study found dog owners walk 22 minutes more per day than non-owners — 134 extra hours of exercise per year. Dogs are statistically more effective than gym memberships at maintaining habits.
