How Pregnancy Weeks Are Counted

Pregnancy is counted from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP), not from conception. This means you are already "2 weeks pregnant" at conception. A full-term pregnancy is 40 weeks (280 days) from LMP. Your doctor uses this dating system because LMP is a known date, while the exact conception date is usually uncertain. If your dates differ from an early ultrasound by more than 7 days, your provider may adjust your due date.

Week-by-Week Development

Weeks 1-4: Fertilization and implantation. Weeks 5-8: Heart begins beating, brain and spinal cord forming. Weeks 9-12: All major organs present, fingers and toes form. Weeks 13-16: Gender can be determined, baby starts moving. Weeks 17-20: You feel kicks (quickening), anatomy scan. Weeks 21-24: Baby gains weight rapidly, viability milestone. Weeks 25-28: Eyes open, lungs developing. Weeks 29-36: Brain develops rapidly, baby turns head-down. Weeks 37-40: Full term — baby is ready for birth.
