Fraction

A number representing a part of a whole, written as a numerator over a denominator.

Adding fractions requires a common denominator because pieces must be the same size to combine. Multiplying fractions does not — multiply numerators and denominators straight across. Dividing by a fraction means multiplying by its reciprocal (flip the second fraction). Simplify by dividing both parts by their greatest common divisor.
