The Cage Size Debate
Pet store cages marketed for hamsters are almost universally too small. The minimum recommended floor space is 450 sq inches for dwarf hamsters and 620 sq inches for Syrians. Most commercial cages offer only 150-300 sq inches. A 40-gallon breeder tank (36x18 inches = 648 sq inches) is cheaper and more humane than any pet store cage. The result of undersized housing: stressed hamsters that bar-chew, pace repetitively, and bite.
Critical Housing Rules
Syrian hamsters MUST live alone — they are territorial and will injure or kill cage mates, often overnight with no warning. This is hardwired biology, not a socialization issue. Dwarf species can sometimes be housed in same-sex pairs if introduced young, but fights can erupt without warning. Always have a backup cage ready. Bedding depth matters enormously: 6+ inches of paper-based bedding allows burrowing, which is essential for hamster mental health. Pine and cedar shavings are toxic — never use them.
Hamster wheels must be large enough for a straight back while running. A too-small wheel forces spinal arching that causes pain and permanent damage. Syrians need 10-12 inch wheels minimum. Dwarfs need 6.5-8 inches.
