How Much Does It Cost to Charge an Electric Car?

The average EV costs $40-60/month to charge at home — roughly $100 less than gas for the same miles.

Home charging cost = battery size (kWh) × electricity rate × charging efficiency. A Tesla Model 3 with a 60 kWh battery at $0.16/kWh with 90% charging efficiency costs about $10.67 for a full charge, providing roughly 270 miles of range. That is about $0.04 per mile, compared to $0.12-0.16 per mile for a gas car at 25-30 MPG.

Home vs Public Charging Costs

Home Level 2 (240V): $0.03-0.06 per mile. Public Level 2: $0.05-0.10 per mile. DC Fast Charging (Tesla Supercharger, Electrify America): $0.10-0.20 per mile. Free workplace or destination charging: $0.00. The cheapest option is always home charging during off-peak hours (if your utility offers time-of-use rates).
