The Real Cost of Owning a Car in 2026: It Is Probably More Than Your Rent

AAA calculates the average cost of car ownership at $12,399 per year. That is $1,033 per month — more than the average one-bedroom apartment rent in 35 states.

Most people think their car costs whatever their monthly payment is. A $400 payment feels like the car costs $400 per month. In reality, the car payment is roughly one-third of the total cost of ownership. Insurance, gas, maintenance, registration, parking, and depreciation add $600-800 per month on top of the payment. The gap between perceived cost and actual cost is why so many people drive cars they cannot truly afford.

The Full Breakdown

Depreciation: $3,500-5,500 per year. A new car loses 20-25% of its value in the first year and roughly 15% annually for the next four years. A $35,000 car is worth about $20,000 after three years — you lost $15,000 in value even if you made every payment. This is the biggest cost of car ownership and the one most people ignore because they never write a check for it.

Fuel: $1,500-3,000 per year. At 12,000 miles per year, 28 MPG, and $3.50/gallon: $1,500. At 15,000 miles and 22 MPG: $2,386. City drivers with gas-inefficient vehicles can hit $3,000+ easily. Electric vehicles cut this to $500-800 at home charging rates.

Insurance: $1,800-2,400 per year. Varies enormously by state, driving record, credit score, and vehicle. Michigan averages over $3,000. Maine averages under $1,000. Young drivers pay 50-100% more than drivers over 25.

Maintenance and repairs: $800-1,500 per year. Oil changes, tires, brakes, filters, and the inevitable unexpected repair. Newer cars cost less (warranty coverage); older cars cost more (aging components). The sweet spot is a 3-5 year old car — depreciation has slowed but major repairs have not started.

Registration, taxes, and fees: $300-800 per year. Parking: $0 (suburban) to $3,000+ (urban). Tolls: $0-1,200 depending on your commute. Car washes: $100-300.

The Calculation Nobody Does

Add it all up: a $35,000 car financed over 5 years costs approximately $55,000-65,000 in total ownership costs over those 5 years. That is $11,000-13,000 per year, or $917-1,083 per month. Compare that to your actual car payment and you see the hidden 60% that never appears on a monthly statement but absolutely comes out of your wallet.
