Average Net Worth by Age: Where Do You Stand?
The median and average net worth numbers tell very different stories. Here are both.
Average net worth is inflated by billionaires. Median (the middle person) is more representative. The gap between average and median reveals how concentrated wealth is in the US.
By Age Group (US, 2024 Federal Reserve Data)
Under 35: Median $39,000, Average $183,000. Ages 35-44: Median $135,000, Average $549,000. Ages 45-54: Median $247,000, Average $975,000. Ages 55-64: Median $364,000, Average $1,566,000. Ages 65-74: Median $409,000, Average $1,794,000. Ages 75+: Median $335,000, Average $1,624,000.
How to Interpret These Numbers
If you are above the median for your age, you are doing better than half of Americans. If you are below, you are in the majority — and the gap is closeable. The single biggest factor separating the median from the average is home equity and retirement account balances. Start or increase both and your net worth trajectory changes dramatically.
