Why altitude increases water loss

At high altitude, you breathe faster (increasing respiratory water loss) and the air is drier. At 8,000ft, you can lose 1–2 extra liters of water per day vs sea level just from breathing and sweating.

Frequently asked questions
How much water should I drink at high altitude?
Add 20–25% to your normal intake for every 3,000ft above 5,000ft. Activity multiplies this further — strenuous hiking at 10,000ft may require 4–6 liters/day.
