Which formula is right?

No single formula is definitive. The Devine formula (1974) was originally designed for drug dosing, not aesthetics. The healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9) is the most clinically accepted guide.

Limitations

These formulas don't account for muscle mass, bone density, or body fat distribution. A muscular 200 lb person and a sedentary 200 lb person have the same "ideal weight" calculation but very different health profiles.

Body composition matters more

Waist circumference below 35 inches (women) or 40 inches (men) is a stronger predictor of metabolic health than scale weight alone.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Devine formula?
Males: 50kg + 2.3kg per inch over 5 feet. Females: 45.5kg + 2.3kg per inch over 5 feet. It was originally created for calculating drug dosages, not aesthetic goals.
