Calories burned at rest (Mifflin-St Jeor)
BMR vs TDEE
BMR is the calories burned by simply existing — breathing, circulating blood, brain function. It does NOT include walking, exercising, digesting food, or any activity. Your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) = BMR × Activity Factor. BMR is the floor — you should never eat below your BMR as it represents the minimum energy your organs need to function.
The Mifflin-St Jeor equation (used here) is the most accurate BMR formula according to the American Dietetic Association, with a margin of error of approximately ±10%. For men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age) + 5. For women: same formula - 161 instead of + 5.
