How Calorie Burn Is Calculated
Calorie burn is estimated using MET values (Metabolic Equivalents). 1 MET equals resting energy expenditure. Walking is about 3.5 METs, jogging 7 METs, and sprinting 15+ METs. The formula: Calories = METs × body weight in kg × hours. A 170-pound person (77 kg) jogging for 30 minutes: 7 × 77 × 0.5 = 270 calories.
These are estimates — actual burn varies by fitness level (fit people burn slightly fewer calories at the same intensity because they are more efficient), body composition (muscle burns more at rest than fat), and environmental conditions (cold weather and altitude increase burn).
