BMI (Body Mass Index)

A ratio of weight to height used to screen for weight categories. Weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared.

BMI categories: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5-24.9 is normal, 25-29.9 is overweight, 30+ is obese. BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat — a muscular person and an overweight person at the same height and weight have identical BMIs despite very different body compositions. It is a screening tool, not a diagnosis.
