Food Quantity Rules

Protein: 6-8 oz per person (main course) or 4-5 oz if multiple proteins. Sides: 4-5 oz per person per side dish, plan 2-3 sides. Appetizers (cocktail only): 8-12 pieces per person. Appetizers (before dinner): 4-6 pieces per person. Dessert: 1 serving per person + 10% extra. Always over-prepare by 10-15% — running out of food is worse than having leftovers.

Beverage Planning

Non-alcohol: 2 drinks per person for a 2-hour event. Beer & wine: 2-3 drinks per person for a 3-4 hour event. Plan 1 bottle of wine per 2-3 guests and 2-3 beers per beer drinker. Full bar: 750ml bottle of spirits serves 16 drinks. One bottle per 8-10 guests for a 3-hour event. Ice: 1 lb per person.

⚡ CalcWolf Insight

Caterers use the "rule of 6-8-10": for a 3-hour event, plan 6 appetizer pieces per person, 8 oz of main course, and 10 oz total of sides. For buffets, reduce protein by 20% (people take smaller portions when there are many options) but increase side variety.
