The Army Body Fat Formula

The U.S. Army uses the Department of Defense circumference-based method from AR 600-9. For males: BF% = 86.010 × log₁₀(waist - neck) - 70.041 × log₁₀(height) + 36.76. For females: BF% = 163.205 × log₁₀(waist + hips - neck) - 97.684 × log₁₀(height) - 78.387. Measurements must be taken at specific anatomical landmarks using a tape measure, pulled snug but not compressing the skin.

Army Body Fat Standards (AR 600-9)

Maximum allowable body fat percentages by age group — Males: 17-20 years: 20%, 21-27: 22%, 28-39: 24%, 40+: 26%. Females: 17-20: 30%, 21-27: 32%, 28-39: 34%, 40+: 36%. Soldiers exceeding these limits after failing the height/weight screening enter the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP) and must show progress toward compliance. Two consecutive failures can lead to separation.

⚡ CalcWolf Insight

Army body fat calculator gets 30K monthly searches — driven by active duty soldiers, National Guard members, ROTC cadets, and people preparing for enlistment. Traffic spikes before PT test seasons (spring and fall). Users are highly engaged, often spending 5+ minutes reviewing the standards.

Frequently asked questions
How does the Army measure body fat?
The Army uses a tape measure method at specific body sites. Males: neck and waist (at navel). Females: neck, waist, and hips (widest point). The circumference values are plugged into a logarithmic formula derived from DoD research. This method has ±3-4% accuracy compared to hydrostatic weighing but is practical for large-scale screening.
What happens if I fail the Army body fat test?
Soldiers who exceed body fat standards after failing the initial height/weight screening are enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP). You receive counseling and must show monthly progress. You have 6 months to reach compliance. Two consecutive record APFT failures with body fat exceedance can result in administrative separation. However, the Army has significantly relaxed enforcement in recent years due to recruiting challenges.
Is the Army body fat formula accurate?
It is reasonably accurate for population screening (±3-4% vs DEXA scans) but can be inaccurate for individuals — especially muscular athletes with thick necks or people with unusual body proportions. A soldier who fails the tape test can request a more accurate method (DEXA, BodPod) at some installations, though this is not universally available.
